College drinking–which can include binge drinking–contributes to over 1,800 student deaths annually. And that is not all. According to NIAAA, the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism , statistics also show that the aftermath effects of college drinking, (on students ages 18-24), lead to 696,000 assaults and 97,000 incidences of rape or sexual assault (also known as sexual battery) every year.
How popular is binge drinking and underage binge drinking?
The NIAAA encourages parents to get involved early and get the conversation started. If you are sending or have sent your child off to college, here are five things parents can do to help protect their college age kids who may be exposed to alcohol for the first time at college. Via http://www.collegedrinkingprevention.gov/
- 1. Talking with students about the dangers of harmful and underage college
drinking–such as the penalties for underage drinking, and how alcohol
use can lead to date rape, violence, and academic failure. - 2. Reaching out periodically and keeping the lines of communication open,
while staying alert for possible alcohol-related problems. - 3. Reminding students to feel free to reach out to them to share
information about their daily activities, and to ask for help if needed. - 4. Learning about the school’s alcohol prevention and emergency
intervention efforts. - 5. Making sure students know signs of alcohol overdose or an
alcohol-related problem, and how to help.
